As Silambarasan turns 34, here are two films that changed his image in the industry.
Silambarasan has been acting since when he was a child, and started his cinematic journey in films made by his father. From a child who delivered punch dialogues just like his father to a leading man in popular films, Simbu has cemented his position as a mass hero who gets the whistles in theatres. However, the actor inside him was unleashed with Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya and Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada — both films directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon.
The director tapped Simbu’s unfocussed energy to give audiences the two memorable films, which managed to divide the audience — people either loved or hated them. However, what everyone agreed on was the quality of Silambarasan ‘s acting. In Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya, many considered his character to be a stalker while others termed him obsessed. But most agreed that Simbu managed to get into the skin of the character who falls in love at the first sight. He doesn’t follow her (Trisha as Jesse) everywhere, but waits for her. She is older than him, his neighbour and belongs to a different religion but Simbu’s character refuses to abide by these societal constructs and confesses his feelings to her. Just the performance by the lead pair makes it worth a watch. The climax is sensitive, and yet unexpected but many believed the film deserved an alternate ending.
Then in 2016 came Achcham Yenbathu Madamaiyada. In this film, Simbu was paired opposite Manjima Mohan. This film did take unexpected turns, but left the audiences dissatisfied with its arc. Yet, there are scenes where Silambarasan stands out. In one of the scenes, Manjima’s character approaches him when he is about to set on a road trip. The way their relationship develops in the film is uncommon and refreshing to watch on the silver screen.
The film comes across like visual poetry on screen. Even the scenes that involve violence, the director makes it clear that the leading man is not a larger than life character but has been pushed to the extreme.
