The state Minister for Technical and Higher Education, Ravindra Waikar recently wrote to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis demanding to hold back the permissions given to five self-financed private universities. The reasons cited for the same were that the said universities had violated the government-prescribed norms. He also demanded setting up a high-level inquiry panel to investigate the allegations against these universities.

The five varsities are REST Self-finance University (Mumbai), DY Patil University (Talegaon), MIT University (Solapur), Ramdev Baba Self-Financed Private University (Nagpur), Vijaybhoomi University (Raigad).

Waikar, in his letter, said that after receiving permissions, the self-financed universities started functioning arbitrarily. “We as a government have no control over these varsities. They have doubled their fee for various courses and the people whose research and PhD degrees are in question have been appointed as vice chancellor. We need to stop this immediately by setting a third-party audit,” demanded Waikar.
